Dame Alice Owen’s School has been a DCSF (Department of Children Schools and Families) Specialist Language College since 1996. Students have the opportunity to study a number of languages either as part of the taught curriculum or as twilight lessons after school. Languages play a prominent part in our extra-curricular programme. All students study at least one language to GCSE with most studying two. Languages remain a popular choice in 6th form with numbers significantly above the National average. Students have the opportunity to visit other countries with well established exchange programmes to France, Germany and Spain. In 6th form students studying Languages have the opportunity to participate in work experience placements abroad.

We also support Language teaching in 10 local primary schools. For more information, follow the link to the Primary Languages area of this website, co-ordinated by Mrs Katharine Wheatley (contact her at wheatleyk@damealiceowens.herts.sch.uk).

Dame Alice Owen’s school aims to support Language teaching and learning in secondary schools across the region. Mr Jonathan Robinson (who teaches German, Spanish, Mandarin and Latin across all Key Stages at the school) leds the MFL (Modern Foreign Languages) Hub and hosts INSET training for colleagues each term. You can contact him at jonathan_peter2002@yahoo.co.uk. Follow the link to the MFL (Modern Foreign Languages) Hub area of the VLE (Virtual Learning Environment) for more detailed information (this can be accessed with out logging in).

In the summer of 2009, the school secured the prestigious International School Award for 2009-2012 from The British Council, in recognition of the breadth of international experience within the school’s curriculum and the opportunities we provide for students. We are proud of the International work we do in school; in lessons and raising money for projects overseas. We also continue to develop our links with schools in other countries.
