In 2007 Dame Alice Owens gained a second specialism in science. Students have the opportunity to study triple science at GCSE. Science subjects are very popular and successful in 6th form. There is a programme of varied science related enrichment activities for students. We have links with local primary schools which offers them the opportunity to use our facilities and resources. They also participate in taster science days and activity days. We have successfully provided INSET opportunities for secondary partners and aim to develop this further.

We have links with a number of universities and local business, but would be keen to hear from any other businesses who would like to work with us, promoting science teaching and learning (see above contact details). The Dame Alice Owen’s School Science Society hosts a series of summer lectures. These will be posted on this school website in the summer term. In the summer of 2009, we were successful in our redesignation bid as a High Performing Specialist School in Science.

Tuesday 2nd March 2010 - about Dame Alice Owen's Partnership Grant with the Royal Society (National Acadamy of Science):

Local scientists and teachers unite to bring cutting-edge science to Dame Alice Owen’s School
with a project entitled: ‘How much sun does it take to bake a skin cell?’
